Holiday and Every Day: Another quick notebook. Online workshop. December 5, 2024
Holiday and Every Day: Another quick notebook
Thursday, December 5 | 1 session
6-8 pm Eastern Time / 5-7 pm Central / 4-6 pm Mountain / 3-5 pm Pacific
This workshop is a more robust alternative to the Quick Stack of Notebooks workshop offered last fall.
The German Stiffened Paper Binding is a quick and sturdy binding for a notebook or rebind of a text that needs to be available for immediate use. The covers can be as rigid or as flexible as you wish.
Cardstock or thin boards are glued directly to the outer leaves. The book is covered in a single piece of paper that is fully-adhered to the spine and boards. Bookcloth that will not fray at the edges could also be used. Our model will be double-fan adhesive bound, a quick, sturdy, and useful method for binding single sheets. A sewn text block works equally well and the endsheets and covering for one of these will also be demonstrated.
Read about the history of this structure here and here.
Once you learn the technique, you can construct this book in less than an hour, and a stack of them in an afternoon. Start using your notebook as soon as the adhesive is dry or make a mountain of them to have a selection of handmade gifts always ready.
In this workshop you will make at least one notebook. If you work quickly, you are welcome to prepare a sewn text block prior to class and cover that book during the session as well. Your finished book plus detailed instructions will be a valuable reference for future work.
Note: Students must provide their own supplies for this workshop. Scroll down for the tool and supply list.
The online format is a series of live tutorials via Zoom. The tutorials are recorded and the videos are available to registered students for 90 days. Students need not be present for the live sessions. A Zoom link will be sent the week before class. Please check your spam filter if you have not received the link within 24 hours of the session.
Payment in full is due at time of registration. See FAQs for refund policy.
